Our new sermon series is starting in 1 Samuel 8. Read ahead, and study ahead as we go chapter by chapter in 1 Samuel.

Do you ever find yourself doing certain things just because you’re trying to prove to others who you are?

It appears that the nation of Israel was doing this when they decided they wanted a king.

The nation of Israel by this time had spent about 400 years in the promised land living under the direction of God through the priests and judges.

The nation seemed to be in a perpetual cycle of falling away from God then after the consequences, they would repent and come under God’s rule and then they would have peace.

Samuel comes along as the last judge but he is also the first of the prophets, receiving the word of God for Israel.

In 1 Samuel 8:1-3 we see that Samuel’s sons were running after money.

1 Samuel 8:4-5

The nation of Israel wants to be “like all the nations”.

Samuel wasn’t happy with this and goes to God.

God says in verse seven that Israel, “rejected me from being king over them.”

God tells Samuel to warn the Israel about having a king.

1 Samuel 8:10-18 Samuels warns them.

The king will demand a lot of the people.

1 Samuel 8:19-20 The people respond that they want to be “like all the nations”.

1 Samuel 8:21-22 God lets them have what they want.

It seems like Israel thinks that they have to have a king so they can be a real nation.

What they didn’t realize is that they already were a real nation established by a real God. They weren’t living out of their identity of who God said they were but were looking to everyone else to give them an identity.

So, what are you living from? Are you living out of trying to do all kinds of things to make others notice who you are? Are you living out of who God says you are?

Israel was looking for a king and they already had one. God said he was their king. Fortunately for Israel and the whole world God sent Jesus to be our king. Are you looking to Jesus as king or are you looking to something else to rule over your life? Do we look to others to rule us? Do we look to something to put our security in to rule us, such as money, possessions, life experiences etc.?

Jesus came to earth to teach us the kingdom of God, He then died for us because we have rejected God as king. He rose from the grave to give us hope and everlasting life.

Questions: What are you living from? Are you living from your identity in Christ?

Who is your King?

Are you trying to make yourself legitimate to other nations, people, and coworkers, or are you resting in the fact that Jesus is enough for you, and what he has done is enough for you?
